A pair of "Rubus" table lamps. Designed for Rorstrand.

Sweden, circa 1960s

Born in Paris to a Danish mother and a Swedish father, Nyland studied architecture, ceramics and sculpture in Finland and Denmark, freelancing for Bing & Grondhal, where his mentor was Paul Gaughin's son, Jean Rene.

An established ceramicist in Copenhagen, he and his partner chemist Nathalie Krebs set up the renowned Saxbo pottery, renowned for their ground-breaking glazes. Following a much-acclaimed exhibition at Svenkst Tenn in 1930, Nylund was recruited by Rorstrand in Lidkoping, Sweden, becoming artistic director and exhibiting internationally.

Over 50 years he made ceramics with specialist glazes and large sculptures for many public displays. He also designed glass and silver, returning to Copenhagen in the '60s. Many of his pieces are in museums in Scandinavia, Paris and further afield.
